Born in Manchester in 1979, Steve initially studied Art & Design, switching to music aged 17. He studied Timpani & Percussion with Charles Fullbrook at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, composition with Rhian Samuel and John Woolrich. He then took up conducting studies with Janos Furst in Paris, and Sir Colin Davis in London.

Steven has participated in several prominent courses and masterclasses including the International Vendome Conducting Masterclass with John Nelson, the Orkney Conducting Course with Sian Edwards, and received private coaching with Bernard Haitink preparing for a student performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. He has conducted the BBC Symphony and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestras, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and has assisted with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony and European Union Youth Orchestra and was a finalist in auditions for assistant conductor with the Seattle Symphony and Minnesota Orchestras. Between 1999-2012 he conducting the City Side Sinfonia, made up of graduate students of the Royal College and Royal Academy of Music, and UK members of the European Union Youth Orchestra and Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. He has collaborated with many notable soloists including violinists Alina Ibragimova, Ilya Gringolts, Thomas Gould and pianists Martin Sturfalt, Dinara Klinton, Victor Maslov and Thomas Kelly.

An strong advocate of contemporary music, Steven worked closely with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, conducting the UK and London Premiere’s of ‘The Last Door of Light’ and ‘Seas of Kirk Swarf’ at St John’s Smith Square.

During the 2020/21 Covid Pandemic Lockdowns, Steven joined out-of-work freelance musicians in Greenwich Park performing socially-distanced symphonies to an unsuspecting public.

In 2017 Steven was first invited to conduct the Bridgewater Sinfonia, a leading semi-professional orchestra in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and was appointed principal conductor the following year.
